Spring and Summer Trout Season is Fast Approaching
by Captain Steve Himel on 02/06/13
With the warm winter we are having, I am expecting an early spring run on trout. Once the water temps reach 60 the trout bite should start in lake on the bridges. One of the best early season techniques is trolling. Trolling success usually begins at the Causeway on some of the warmer sunny days in February and soon after the bridges on the eastern end start producing. I am ready for trolling season and have trolling rod rigged with lead core line, rattle traps and B-2 squid trailers. I will let you know when the bite starts. The trophy trout season usually begins in April with the full moon cycle and continues into May and early June. I will be fishing hand caught live croakers (4” to 6”) free lined for sow trout under the pilings of the bridges during that time. I usually catch some really big fish up to 6 or 7 pounds using this technique. If you really want a wall hanger this is the way to catch them. The summer season is not known for trophies but the action is usually almost non-stop in Black Bay and Breton sound where I fish with live bait. If you are interested in Lake Pontchartrain trolling trips and trophy trout trips or summer live bait fishing in Breton Sound, give and a call and I can give you more details. I normally fish the Lake until the end of May and then move to Delacroix for the summer season. I have been guiding in this area for 17 years and specialize in live bait speckled trout fishing. My goal is to give you and your party the type of trip you are looking for. I can also arrange lodging and can cater to large groups using other Captains.
